The Gurriny Yealamucka Health and Wellbeing Centre is a groundbreaking facility that provides allied health, primary health, and social and emotional wellbeing services to the community of Yarrabah, Queensland. This modern facility replaces Gurriny’s previous services at Workshop Rd, offering culturally appropriate spaces designed to respect and integrate the region’s social, cultural, and environmental context.
The centre’s name, Gurriny Yealamucka, which translates to “Good Healing Water” in the language of the Gunggandji Peoples, is reflected in the design and layout. The building’s positioning, finishes, art screens, and garden spaces all draw inspiration from the healing properties of water.
A key cultural element is the art screen enveloping the building entry, showcasing artworks by renowned artists Wayne Connolly and Philomena Yeatman. These elements honor the cultural significance of Guyula, the Sea Hawk, a revered protector of Yarrabah. Additionally, the landscaping was developed in collaboration with traditional owners to connect the healing water theme to an outdoor yarning circle, native bush foods, and culturally significant plants.
